Explore the Markets and Do a Cooking Class One of the best things to do when travelling around Vietnam is to explore the thousands of markets you can find in every town. Not surprisingly then it is normal to go to Da Nang by air. Da Nang is the commercial hub for central Vietnam, being the largest city in the region. Being the largest city in the central region, Da Nang is on the National Route 1, a major highway that runs from top to bottom in Vietnam. Similarly there is a station stop on the North South Railway too. The city is famous for its sandy beaches, being a favorite tourist destination for locals and foreigners alike. Moreover it was a French port so it has the added attraction of having French influence in architecture and style. The French called Da Nang “Tourane” or “Turon” during their colonial rule. UNESCO World Heritage Sites within 100 kms of Da Nang Within 100 kms 62 miles you can find various UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One such site is the Imperial City of Hue. A former capital of imperial Vietnam under the Nguyen dynasty, it is a walled city. A moat surrounds the walled city, offering protection. In the center is a citadel. Within the walls there was a place to house the royal family called the Purple Forbidden City and villas for mandarins. In addition there are plenty of shrines and a garden setting. However when the French took over, the place was used for ceremonial functions. The site itself was heavily damaged in the IndoChina Wars 1946-1991 and was left neglected. Though various restoration projects have begun. Another UNESCO World Heritage site is Hoi An. Its recognition came in 1999 came as a well preserved South East trading port between the 15th and 19th century. Note the town planning has both local and foreign influences. Of particular note is the Japanese bridge, dating back to the 16th and 17th century. Apart from its history and architecture, the city is famous for textiles, ceramics and hand crafted lanterns. Another of Hoi An’s claims to fame is the culinary capital of the “Banh Mi”. This is a baguette with meats, pate and fresh herbs. Thirdly, “My Son” is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The partial Hindu ruins come from the era of the Cham people. The kings of the Champa ruled between the 4th and 14th century. From Indian influence, they dedicated the temples to the god Shiva. They are in an area of about 2 kms wide surrounded by two mountain ranges, near the village of Duy Phu. At one time there were 70 temples but US bombings destroyed many of the sites within one week of the Vietnam War 1955 to 1975.
